Joyce was my best friend through High School. We could read each other's thoughts. Her family was my family. And our bond reached on through adulthood. I could go a year without talking to Joyce and when we picked up the phone, after the first hello, it was like we were still back in school and had just talked an hour before.
I always chided myself for picking such a beautiful best friend. She always outshone me and I didn't mind. Joyce never knew how beautiful she was. She was just a regular person inside and she had such a tender, kind heart. But she was a goofball too and a joker and that's why I loved her. She made me laugh. In fact, more than once she got me in trouble for dragging me into her crazy schemes. But, we always seemed to survive.
Our friendship will always survive too. I know that one day we'll be able to be together again. We'll pull our feet up under us on the couch, give each other a big hug and continue laughing and cutting up the way we always did. I miss her every day.
